Mulbekh Chamba

Maitreya Statue

Mulbekh Chamba is a 9-metre high rock sculpture of Maitreya Buddha of future ages. It is located at Mulbekh in Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir.

Its execution combines esoteric Shaivite symbolism and early Buddhist art. The statue, carved on a hillside in the Suru Valley, belongs to 9th century. This imposing sculpture depicts a standing Bodhisattva with 4 arms and a headdress. It is adorned with jewels. Evidences reveal that this sculpture was made when Kashmiri Buddhist missionaries came traveling east of the Himalayas.

Mulbekh Gompa is a nearby attraction.

Mulbekh Chamba is accessible from Kargil (45 km west) on the road to Leh (190 km).
