Golden Eagle

Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of the largest and most regal birds of prey. Its wings are long and broad with a distinct curve to the rear edge. The head and neck protrude considerably and the tail is longer. The bird is brown with a golden crown and nape. The upper wing coverts show a pale panel, while the tail is gray and black-tipped.

Diet consists mainly of small animals, especially the mountain hare. Rabbits, large rodents, young foxes, reptiles, mink, lizards, snakes and game birds are also consumed. The eagle dives down onto its prey and catches it with outstretched, clawed feet.

Nest is built with sticks and twigs, usually located high in trees or on cliffs. Females lay one to four white eggs with light brown markings. It inhabits mountains, canyons, scrub and grasslands.

The bird can be seen in Changthang of Leh District.
