Drass Valley (also spelt as Dras Valley) is one of the charming valleys in
Ladakh,
Jammu and Kashmir. This enchanting valley formed by the
Drass River gives rise to the Machoi Glacier near the
Zoji La pass.
Brokpas inhabits the most part of this valley. These tribes are believed to be the descendants of the Dards of Chilas in the Gilgit region. Barley and other coarse cereals are the main crops grown in this region.
Drass, perched at an altitude of 3230 m, is a small township lying in the centre of the valley. It is about 60 km west of Kargil on the road to Srinagar.
Shigar River which flows through this valley makes the place more enchanting to the eyes. Places of tourist interest include Zoji La pass,
Puga Valley and various monasteries.
Drass Valley is also an ideal base for treks to Suru Valley and Amarnath Cave. The region also offers many short treks and hikes to upland villages.
Srinagar Airport (147 km)is the nearest airport. Buses from Srinagar to Kargil and Leh pass through the Drass Valley.
