Hemis




Situated on the bank of the Indus River, Hemis is a town in the eastern part of Ladakh division in Leh District, Jammu and Kashmir. It is around 40 km south-east of Leh. Hemis is a wayside haven for trekkers and tourists in this region.

Hemis High Altitude National Park situated here derived its name from the Hemis Gompa, the biggest monastery in Ladakh. Hemis Chheshu, a popular summer festival, is celebrated in a grand manner.

By road, Hemis is accessible on the Leh-Manali route. The nearest airport is Leh Airport and the nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
