Bakerwal Tribe

Bakarwal Tribe

The Bakerwals of Jammu and Kashmir belong to the bigger group of the Gujjar tribe. They are called Bakerwal as they are tenders of Bakri or goats. They lead a nomadic existence. They trace their origin to the tribes of Issac. The Bakerwals have maintained their distinct identity in spite of living amongst Kashmiris. They have long beards and wear turbans. Their physical characteristics, language, manners, customs, and dress have very little in common with non-Gujjar Kashmiris. They are a hardy and hospitable people, living in tune with nature.
