The town caters to almost 10 villages in the Sainj and Jibba Valleys, which have a population of 7,000. These valleys are densely forested, and are noted for Great Himalayan National Park, which harbors a variety of animals and birds such as mountain goats, bharal, brown bear, leopard and monal. Trekking through the park to Rakte Sar, where the Sainj River originates, is famous.

The upper catchments of Sainj consist of rare species of herbs and mushrooms. Horticulture and cultivation of garlic and vegetables are the main occupation of the people here.

Sainj is 30 km from Kullu via Aut. The nearest airport is at Kullu, and the nearby railhead is at Pathankot. April to June and September to October are the best time to visit. There are rest houses providing accommodation facilities nearby.
