Pong Dam




Built across river Beas in Kangra District, Pong Dam holds the distinction of being the highest earthen dam so far constructed in the country. It is situated at a height of about 450 m, covering an area of about 45,000 hectares. The dam site serves as a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The whole reservoir is declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Himachal Pradesh Government in 1986.

Pong Dam, 8 km from Kangra, is accessible from Masrur, Pathankot and Nurpur. The nearest broad gauge railhead is at Pathankot, 32 km from the Dam. The nearest airport is Gaggal Dharamsala Airport.
