The largest village in Hangrang Valley of Kinnaur District
, Nako, at an altitude of 3,662 m, is 117 km from Kalpa. It is a scenic place, and is built around a lucid lake (Nako Lake
), and in its northern direction are four
s with stuccoed images, which are believed to be of saint Padmasambhava. There are other two temples housing large prayer wheels.
A rock with a footprint like impression of Padmasambhava is enshrined here. Another highlight is Nako Chokhor, an 11th century complex, which is considered to be of the residence of Rinchen Zangpo, a great scholar. Though the property is in a ruined state, its interior paintings are note worthy.
Nako Lake offers a perfect base for boating during summers, and in winter, it is suitable for ice-skating. Camping provisions are available nearby.
Nako can be reached from
Sangla, which is 138 km away.
