Kangra

Kangra town is a picturesque spot in the confluence of Bener and Majhi streams, overlooking the Ban Ganga torrent, in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. In ancient times, this historic town, then called Nagarkot, had witnessed several invasions and political upheavals. The ruined Kangra Fort stands testimony to its glorious past.

Temples and crafts are the rich cultural legacy of Kangra. Its paintings and beautifully embroidered shawls are appreciated world-over. Brajeshwari Devi Temple in Kangra is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. Masrur, 32 km from Kangra, is famous for rock-cut temples. Other major temples are those of Baijnath, Jawalamukhi and Chamunda Devi.

People of Kangra speak Hindi and Dogri language. Kangra town is about 18 km south of Dharamsala and the closest airport is Gaggal. Kangra has two railway stations: Kangra station and Kangra Mandir Railway Station. A ride in the train, Kangra Queen, from Pathankot and Palampur provides a panoramic view of the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. Kangra Bus Station is located north of the Bazaar, along the Dharamsala Road. There are frequent buses to Dharamsala and Palampur. March-June is the best time to visit this place.
