Khajjiar, at an altitude of 6,500 ft, is a dish shaped hill station on the
Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas in
Chamba District of
Himachal Pradesh. Due to its supreme location, Khajjiar is sometimes referred to as the
Gulmarg of Himachal Pradesh.
Khajjiar, acknowledged as 'Mini Switzerland', is set against the backdrop of dense pines, deodars and lush green pastures, which add to the beauty of place. It got its name from a serpent god Khajji Naga. There is a temple dedicated to Khajji Naga in the vicinity, which forms one of the principal attractions of Khajjiar.
Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary, is a major highlight of the area. Another landmark is Khajjiar Lake, around which the place is built. This lake is considered sacred, and several legends are associated with it. Apart from this, there is a shrine named Golden Devi Temple, which is inclusive of a beautiful golf course.
Tourist Bungalows, youth hostel and guesthouses provides accommodation. There is a tourist office run by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development to cater to the needs of visitors. May to July and September to November are the best time to visit.
Gaggal Dharamsala Airport in Kangra and the railhead at Pathankot are the nearest access points.
