Dharampur is an old town situated on the
National Highway 22, 15 km from
Kasauli, in
Himachal Pradesh. Nestled amid the salubrious and pristine environment of the Kasauli and
Barog ranges, it presents a charming picture of nature’s splendor at work – the healthy air of the fragrant pines and the scenic bliss of the surrounding landscape venerates one’s soul and spirit. Dharampur is 45 km north of
Chandigarh.
Dharampur rose to prominence after the advent of the British into the hills in the 19th century. Opening of the Grand Hindustan-Tibet Cart Road in 1860 necessitated Dharampur being a halting station while en-route to Shimla. The town got a further economic boost when Shimla was made the central government’s summer seat in 1864. The unique geographical location of Dharampur made it an automatic choice for rail head and the settlement prospered during the latter periods of British rule in India. Now it is one of the prominent towns outside Shimla.
Dharampur has one of the best hospitals for the cure of Tuberculosis in India. The Mansa Devi Temple is another spot worth visiting.
Indira Gandhi International Airport serves Dharampur. Chandigarh Airport is the nearest domestic airport. Dharampur narrow gauge railway station is situated on the Kalka-Shimla line. Kalka Railway Station is the nearest broad gauge railhead.
