Goddess Jwalamukhi

Goddess Jwalamukhi is the Goddess of Light. Jwalamukhi represents fire and the characteristic of fire, which is to convert all into ashes.

The Goddess is highly revered in the Jwalamukhi Temple, situated in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. This is the place where Sati's tongue is said to have fallen, and the goddess is manifest as tiny flames that burn in a flawless blue color through fissures in the ancient rock. Even the Pandavas are believed to have visited this sacred place.

Ancient legends give an explanation for the term 'Jwalamukhi'. There was a time when demons reigned over the Himalaya mountains and troubled the gods. Led by Lord Vishnu, the gods decided to destroy them. They focused their strengths and huge flames or 'jwala's rose from the ground. From that fire, a young girl took birth. She is regarded as Adishakti - the first 'shakti'.
