Brahmins

Brahmanas

Brahmins are members of the Hindu priestly caste and are a highly revered group in Hindu religion. They were considered the spiritual teachers of the Vedas. They conduct the daily rites and the purification ceremonies.

Brahmins usually start to wear poonal (a sacred thread) with Upanayanam. Every year on Aavani Avittam, it is changed anew, along with the chanting of mantras. They are strict vegetarians and teetotalers.

The word Brahmin literally means ‘one who has realized or is attempting to realize Brahman (the supreme reality).' It is believed that Brahmins are originated from the mouth of Brahma.
