Thanesar

Thanesar is a small town in the vicinity of Kurukshetra in Haryana. It is one of the sacred pilgrim centers of Hindus. The name ‘Thanesar’ is derived from the words ‘sthan' and 'eswar.’ Lord Shiva is considered as the deity of Thanesar. Nowadays, the place is famous for the Sthanesvar Mahadev temple and the Ma Bhadra Kali temple. Thanesar is often called the ‘twin town’ of Kurukshetra as it lies adjoining the town. A Gurdwara that lies opposite the Sthanesvar Mahadev temple has been sanctified by the visit of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Neelkanthi Krishna Dham Yathri Nivas, which is a few kilometers from the railway station, is set up by the Haryana Tourism and it provides well furnished accommodation. Another tourist complex at Piply, Parakeet is also run by the Haryana Tourism. It is about 5 km from Kurukshetra.

The nearest airports are at Delhi and Chandigarh. Taxi services are available. Kurukshetra is a major railway station. Regular trains are available to and from Delhi. Direct trains are available to Mumbai, Vadodara, Agra, Mathura, Chandigarh and Simla. Special one-day tour coaches from Delhi and Chandigarh are made available by the Haryana Tourism Department. Besides this, regular buses are available to Haridwar, Chandigarh and Dellhi. Haryana Roadways and other State corporations run buses through Kurukshetra, thus connecting it to Delhi.
