Chhatta Rai Mukand Das

Chhatta Rai Mukand Das, a historical edifice in Mahendragarh, was constructed by Ray-i-Rayan Mukand Dass, the Diwan of Narnaul, during the rule of Shah Jahan. It is believed that Akbar and Birbal visited this town - hence it is also known as Birbal ka Chhatta. Noted for its architectural splendor, Chhatta Rai Mukand Das is a five storied structure with several halls, rooms and pavilions.

The building boasts light elliptical pavilions on different levels, halls on pillars and verandah around a central court. An extensive open terrace to the south adds to the charm of the building. There is a ruined well on the terrace in the south-eastern corner. It was from this well the water was supplied to the various levels with the aid of a Persian wheel.

An isolated gateway-complex, complete with projecting balconies and marble coating, is to the west of the palace. It is believed to have been the main entrance of the complex. Besides, the building has four underground tunnels which lead to Jaipur, Delhi and Dhosi.

Sarai Rai Mukand Das, which bears an epigraph, is alongside the building.
