Banyan Tree

Also known as Vata



Banyan Tree (Ficus bengalensis) is a very large tree with spreading branches. It has large leaves and small blossoms, and cherry like scarlet fruit. The milky juice is externally applied for pains and bruises and as an anodyne in rheumatism and lumbago. It is also used as a medicine for toothache. The bark and the seed are tonic, harsh and cooling.

It is found in front of the temples in Kerala. Many legends are associated with the Banyan Tree and it is also worshipped in some parts of India.
