Iltutmish




Iltutmish belonged to the Slave dynasty and was the greatest of the Delhi Sultan's. He married the daughter of Qutb-ud-Din Aibak, whom he succeeded in 1211. He strengthened and expanded the Muslim empire in northern India and moved the capital to Delhi.

Iltutmish took the control over various rebellious parts of the Sultanate. He also captured the regions of Mundawar, Malwa and Ujjain and defeated Maliks of Bengal, Yildiz and Qabacha. During his reign, he established a monarchical form of government and rule and laid the foundation of Delhi Sultanate. He maintained an organized army and created a new form of currency, the Tanka coin (silver) and Jital (copper). He also completed the construction of the Qutub Minar.

He passed away in 1236.
