Common Coot




Common Coot is a dark grey bird with a black head and neck, a white forehead and beak and red eyes. The feet are large and lobed. The size differs from 36 to 38 cm.

The bird is omnivorous. It feeds on (aquatic) plants and seeds. Nest is made from reeds, twigs and leaves, and even floating waste products, like plastic bags. The bird is locally called Dasari, Aari, or Thekari.

It is found throughout India.
