Durree

Durree is a cotton woven thick fabric common in Indian homes. It is used as floor coverings and beds. On festive occasions these durries are seen over the carpets and other embroidered items.

Durree weaving is an art practiced by the women in the villages. In Punjab and Haryana, durries are woven by Jat women. Jaisalmer and Barmer in Rajasthan are the centers for woolen durries, popular as Panja durries. The durries produced in Uttar Pradesh have geometrical patterns woven in strips, diamonds and lozenges.

Navalgund in Karnataka and Salem in Tamilnadu are other important centers in durree weaving. In Navalgund, durries are also known as Jamkhans which are rich in patterns and depict stylized parrots and peacocks. At Bhavani in Salem, the durries are woven in silk and cotton and have lotus at the center. Warangal near Hyderabad also manufactures a wide variety of durries.
