Saputara

Saputara is situated in the Dangs forest area of Sahyadari Ranges, on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. Located at an altitude of 1000 m, it has a cool climate. The temperature doesn't exceed above 28 oC even in summer months. Surat is 160 km away.

The name Saputara literally means the abode of serpents. There is an idol of a snake on the banks of the river Sarpaganga. Tribals worship this idol on festivals like Holi. Legends have it that Lord Ram, hero of the Ramayana, spent 11 years of his exile in Saputara forests. Saputara has marvelous waterfalls and the place is ideal for watching sunrise and sunset. In the pleasant monsoon, Saputara offers breathtaking scenes for nature lovers. Boating facilities are available on the lake. The place also houses some beautiful gardens and a museum. The main attraction of Saputara is the ‘Pushpak Ropeway’. It is considered the longest ropeway in the country and attracts a large number of children and young couples. There is a hill resort with hotels, parks, swimming pools theatres and a museum.
