Gupta Empire




Gupta Empire dates back to the 4th century AD and the reign of Gupta rulers is often referred as the golden age of Indian history. They ruled India for more than two centuries.

The greatest of the Gupta Kings was Chandragupta I, who is referred to as the king of kings. He strengthened his position by making alliance with Lichchhavis. Other prominent kings in the Gupta dynasty were Samudragupta and Vikramaditya. Samudragupta, popularly known as Indian Napolean, expanded the empire in all directions.

Their descendants such as Kumaragupta and Skandagupta also played a significant role in widening the kingdom, of which Skandagupta succeeded in driving back the white Huns. After the fall of Gupta Empire, north India was broken into smaller kingdoms.

Gupta Empire marked a remarkable beginning of the classical art forms, and many treatises on grammar, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine were written during this period. The great personalities such as Kalidasa and Aryabhata lived in this period, and they specialized in literature and astronomy respectively. This era also has to its credit the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves. In addition, the great work on the art of love Kamasutra emerged during this period.
