Jamnagar District




Jamnagar is one of the six districts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The city of Jamnagar is the headquarters. Spread over an area of 14,125 sq km, Jamnagar District accommodates a population of around 2 million.

Major crops are groundnut and jowar. Rozi Bedi, Dwaraka, Okha, and Sikka are the main ports. Jamnagar is well known for its pearl fisheries, brass metal products and nature cures. Sikka is noted for the state's biggest cement factory. Salt is produced in large quantities.

Jamnagar District is famous for Gujarat's traditional handicraft, (bandhej or bandhani). Closely associated with the Krishna legend, Dwaraka is one of the four most sacred pilgrim centers of the Hindus. On leaving Mathura, Lord Krishna is believed to have established his kingdom at Dwaraka. Interesting tourist destinations are Pratap Vilas palace, the 16th century Darbargadh palace, the Lakota island palace, and Lakhota lake. September to March is the best period to visit Jamnagar.
