Divar is a peaceful island located at a distance of 12 km from Panaji
. Divar is a corruption of Divali (Diwali)
, which was also pronounced as Divaddi. The deity of Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple
was originally based at Divar. Divar's ancient name was Dvipavati, island of the sun or moon, or the island of lights. This name is justified by the fact that on the occasion of the feast of the Saptakoteshwar temple, the whole island used to become lit with lights, assuming the appearance of Diwali Feast. Divar is an excellent place for bird watching. There are many elegant villas with Goan balconies and deep verandahs, which add to the quaint look of this village.
The famous Bonderam festival which falls on the 4th Saturday of August, is celebrated in Divar Island with great pomp and festivity. On this day, this quiet island is filled with festivities.
Ferries go every half hour to Divar Island from Old Goa. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, the Crocodile Habitat and the world heritage monuments at Old Goa are nearby attractions.
