Khadi is a handspun and hand-woven cloth. It is reminiscent of India’s freedom struggle owing to
Mahatma Gandhi. The great leader, Gandhi, had called upon the people of the country to discontinue the use of foreign cloths and instead make their own clothing. The Khadi cloth thus went on to become the symbol of India’s self sufficiency.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission, a Government of India body, is the major institution promoting the Khadi. Almost every village has a Khadi unit, where people spun the yarn and weave the cloth without resorting to the use of any heavy machinery. The weaving of this fabric is a major source of livelihood for most of the rural population.
Khadi was restricted to the rural areas till the yesteryears. But it is now a sought after fabric in the fashion circle. It is also a favorite with the politicians. Known for its comfort, this particular fabric suits the Indian weather conditions perfectly. Its versatility is what makes it a renowned fabric, not only in India but in the international level also.
