Shri Jagannath Dev Temple

Shri Jagannath Dev Temple is a highly revered shrine, located at Sadar Bazar, in Raipur of Chhattisgarh. It is believed to have been built in the 18th century. The presiding deity is Lord Jagannath.

Legend is that once a Pujari (priest) family from Rajasthan, who was passing through the area, performed puja to cure the ailing king of the region. The king was recovered and as per the request of the king, Pujari and his family stayed back and built this temple. The current pujaris of this temple are believed to be the descendants of the pujari who cured the king.

The annual festival, Rathyatra, is celebrated here with much pomp and splendor. It lasts for 15 days. The idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Subhadra are taken out in procession on this occasion. A darshan of these three deities during the festival is believed to attain Nirvana.
