Shehnai

A musical instrument



Shehnai is a quadruple-reed wind instrument with two upper reeds and two lower reeds. A 'Mangala Vadya' or instrument played on auspicious occasions, its body is made of wood and has a brass bell. It encompasses eight or nine holes which are partially or completely occluded with wax. In appearance, the instrument looks like Nagaswaram. Ustad Bismillah Khan has popularized Shehnai as a north Indian classical instrument.
