Dhamtari District




Situated in the fertile plains of the Chhattisgarh, Dhamtari District covers an area of 4,081 sq km. It has a population of 700,000. The Mahanadi is the principal river. The chief crop is paddy and there are around 106 rice mills.

Dhamtari has a rich cultural heritage and has its own dance styles, cuisine, music and traditional folk songs, of which the Sohar, Bihav and Pathoni songs are very famous. The seasonal Chhattisgarhi folk songs are Fag Baramasi, and Sawnahi. Gond, Uranv, Korva, Kol, Halba, and Madiya are the major tribes. Places of tourist interest include Gangrel Dam and Sihava.
