Nicobar District




The district of Nicobar is situated in the south-east of the Bay of Bengal. There are 22 large and small islands, out of which only 12 are inhabited. Nicobar is sub divided into Car Nicobar and Nancowry. Out of the total population, around 70% belong to tribal category. Nicobari and Shompen are the two main tribes. Six distinct dialects and languages are spoken. 98% of the Nicobarese are Christians following the Protestant faith.

The primary occupation of the tribal population is agriculture, which is basically limited to coconut, arecanut and banana plantations. Music and dance are components of the Nicobari culture. The Nicobarese dance is a circular dance performed in or near the houses. Dancing is always accompanied by singing. Folklore is narrated and folk songs are sung on festive occasions.

The rare flora and fauna, underwater marine life and corals, with crystal clear water and mangrove-lined creeks, offer a dream-view of the rare gifts of nature. The Nancowry harbour, with two entrances towards the east and west, is one of the finest and safest harbours in the world. The Magapode Island Sanctuary, the southern most wildlife sanctuary of India, is one of the last strongholds of greatly endangered Magapode.

Nicobar is well connected to Port Blair with ship as well as air. Helicopter service is also available.
