Great Nicobar

Great Nicobar, dominated by the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, is the biggest island in the Nicobar group of islands. Campbell Bay, the headquarters of this island, is fast developing into a township. Campbell Bay is about 543 km from Port Blair. The island was originally inhabited by the extremely shy and non-violent primitive tribes, the Shompens. The northern half of the island is dotted with beautiful hills and mountain ranges while the rest of the land is quite flat.

Great Nicobar has three perennial rivers namely the Galathea, Alexandria and Doyma. It has a beach near Galathea, which remains as a place for Giant Leather Back Turtles.

Places of tourist interest are Mount Thuliar, Campbell Bay National Park and Galathea National Park. The island’s southern most point, the Indira point (formerly Pygmallion Point) is also the southern most point of India.
