Sitamarhi District




Sitamarhi District of Bihar occupies an area of 2,643 sq km with a population of two and a half million. It includes three sub divisions, Sitamarhi Sadar, Shivahar, and Pupri.

Economy depends mainly on agriculture and industry. Paddy, rice, wheat, maize, and lentils are grown here. There is a sugar factory at Riga, and rice and oil mills throughout the district. The Bagmati is the main river.

Sitamarhi is believed to be the birthplace of Sita, the heroine of the Ramayana and there is a Janaki Temple in her honor. Beside the temple is a spring.
