Poor man's Darjeeling



Purnia District in Bihar covers an area of 3,202 sq km. It is bordered by Araria District in the north, Katihar and Bhagalpur districts in the South, Kishanganj District in the east and Madhepura and Saharsa districts in the west. The population is almost two million. Hindi is the main language. The rivers Kosi and Mahananda and their tributaries such as the Parman, Kankai, Soura and Faryani cross different parts of Purnia.

Purnia District has a moist humid climate. July and August are the wettest months of the year. The average rainfall is 1,412 mm, which is the highest rainfall in the state of Bihar. The winter season starts in November and continues up to February. Summer starts from April and lasts up to June. Purnia produces large number of poultry and eggs. It has a suitable environment for pig production. The district has 1 sugar mill at Banmankhi and 716 other small-scale industries.

The hills of Darjeeling, around 200 km from the district headquarters Purnia, Kajha Kothi, an ideal spot for picnics and boating, Kali Mandir, Matha Asthan at Chunapur are the tourist destinations.
