Naga Tribes

Naga is a primitive tribal community settled in the northern, north-eastern and north-western hills of Manipur. These people are considered as the strong and heavy members of Mongolian type.

Nagas are divided into many groups namely Thangkhuls, Muram Nagas, Tadubi, Kolya, Khoiras or Mayang Khong, Kabuis, Koirengs, Chirus and Marings. There are several stories about the origin of different groups of Nagas. According to the habitat, their skin color varies. The Tangkhuls and Muran Nagas are fairer than Kabuis.

The community members are very expert in bow fight, spear throwing and in the use of Dao. They find their livelihood from hunting, basket making and fishing. Some of them also engage in farming. Commonly Naga women are fair in complexion. The members wear dresses made of cotton or synthetic fiber. Both men and women are fond of ornaments.

Wooden poles and bamboos are used to construct houses. Rice is their staple food and the members also eat dried fish. Kang is a popular game accepted by the tribe. They also play wrestling, long jump, spear throwing and stone lifting.
