Tezpur

Tezpur, the administrative headquarters of Sonitpur District, is an ancient city located at the banks of Brahmaputra River, in Assam. The undulating hillocks and green draped valleys dotting its terrain, the enchanting sight of snow clad Himalayas in the Northern backdrop and the magnificent archaeological remains that tell volumes about its rich past make Tezpur a travelers delight. Tezpur is 181 km northeast of Guwahati.

Tezpur is steeped in history and the earliest recorded events of the town dates back to the 7th century. It was then known as Haruppesvera or Hadapervara. Its medieval periods are lost in antiquity. The city regained prominence during the British rule, when they made Tezpur, realizing its strategic position, a garrison town. It later evolved as a major port town and a center for trade and commerce in the state. Tezpur Festival is a major annual event organized by the district administration.

Places of tourist interest in and around the town include Cole Park, Nehru Maidan, Mahabhairav Temple, Agnigarh, Da-Parbatia temple and Bamuni Hills. Bhalukpong, Nameri Tiger Reserve, Bhomoraguri, Orang Wildlife Sanctuary (65 km) and Kaziranga National Park (80 km) constitute nearby excursions.

Tezpur Airport is 7 km from city center. State buses, starting from the State bus stand at KK Road, plies to Guwahati, Sibisagar, Siliguri, Shillong and Dibrugarh.
