Tawang District




The Tawang District, covering an area of 2,085 sq km, lies at an altitude of 3,500 m above sea level. It is bordered by Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the south-west and West Kameng District in the east. The total forest area is 1,230 sq km. The town of Tawang is the headquarters.

The people of Tawang District mostly belong to the Monpa tribe. Their houses are constructed with stones and timbers. The main occupation of the tribesmen is agriculture and animal husbandry. Crops raised in Tawang District include potato, maize and millet. They are famous for their arts, crafts and manufacturing of incense. Tawang is a place of nunneries, peaks, lakes, hot springs and waterfalls. The main rivers are Tawang-Chu and Namjang-Chu, which are ideal for river rafting. Nearest airport is at Tezpur and Rangapara (in Assam) is the nearest railway station.
