Warangal

Warangal, the fifth largest city in Andhra Pradesh, is situated 157 km northeast of Hyderabad. It is a leading industrial and cultural center in the state and is noted for its beautiful lakes, temples and wildlife. It is the headquarters of Warangal District

This erstwhile capital of the Kakatiyas is steeped in history. It is believed that the Prola Raja of the Kakatiya dynasty founded this town in the 12th century. The Kakatiyas, who ruled the place for more than 200 years, were patrons of art and literature and the legacy they left behind still lingers on in the old city and its surroundings. Passionate references about this city can be found in the travel diaries of Marco Polo.

Major tourist attractions in the city include the 13th century star shaped Shiva temple, Warangal fort and the thousand pillared temple. The Pakhal Lake and Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary and Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary are some spots in the vicinity that are worth visiting.

Warangal Airport, a non-operational airport, is 5 km from city center. Nearest airport is at Hyderabad. Warangal Junction Railway Station is a prominent rail head and is connected with Secunderabad and Khammam. Regular buses are available to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Karimnagar and Khammam.
