Puttaparthi, the abode of Sathya Sai Baba, is about 29 km from Penukonda and 125 km northeast of Bangalore, on the banks of the Chitravathi River, in Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh. Sathya Sai Baba was born here in 1926. Puttaparthi shot to international fame since the inauguration of his present ashram, Prasanthi Nilayam, in 1950.

Puttaparthi Township has several facilities including a Super Specialty Hospital, Airport, Railway Station, a dairy called Gokulam, Sri Sathya Sai Hill View Stadium, planetarium and religious and educational institutions. The Puttaparthi Airport is located 1 km from the Super Specialty Hospital and 6 km from the ashram. The airport was built in 1990 as preparation for Swami’s 70th birthday when over 3 million devotees visited the ashram from all over India and worldwide.
