Porja Tribe

Porja is a scheduled tribe found in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Orissa. The tribe is also known by the name Konda-Dora. The words 'Konda' means 'hill' and 'Dora' means 'leader'. Porjas are good dancers, singers and musicians.

They speak Konda-Dora, a Dravidian language, and Telugu. Agriculture is their main occupation. Some also engage in animal husbandry. The religious system of this tribe blends its traditional beliefs with Vaishnavite Hinduism.

Porjas are divided into two groups – the Pedda Kondalu and the Chinna Kondalu. They built their houses with stone pillars and brick walls. The men folk wear shirts and dhotis (loin cloths), and women wear blouses with long sarees.
