Krishna Deva Raya

Krishna Deva Raya's reign in 16th century AD is considered to be the golden age of Vijayanagar empire. He strenghtened his kingdom through many strategic and successful military campaigns against his enemies mainly of Bijapur and Orissa. Krishna Deva was also a great patron of arts and culture. He set apart a special hall for literary gatherings and had a band of eight poets in his court called 'Ashta Diggajalu,' literally 'eight pillars.' Krishna Deva Raya himself was a reputed literary scholar in several languages with acclaimed works to his credit. References of his warmth and hospitality are found in the accounts of many foreign travellers. Discrmination based on religion or class was non-existant in Krishna Deva Raya's times.

Krishna Deva Raya built numerous monuments of which several still attest to his vision and benevolence. The town he built near the capital Vijayanagar even in its current dilapidated state reflects the magnificence of his times.
