East Godavari District




East Godavari District is at a distance of 564 km from Hyderabad and is located in the north-east of Andhra Pradesh. The district headquarters is Kakinada. Formerly a part of old Godavari District, it assumed independent status when West Godavari District was separated in 1925. Stone implements obtained from Manyam area prove that this area was inhabited from pre-historic times. It is closely associated with the river Godavari and occupies a major portion of the delta area.

East Godavari is bounded by Visakhapatnam District and the state of Orissa in the north, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the south, and the districts of Khammam and west Godavari in the west.

The area occupied by East Godavari is 10,807 sq km. It consists of five revenue divisions namely, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Peddapuram, Rampachodavaram and Amalapuram.

The region has forest wealth extending to 32.3 million hectares. Bamboo forests are more in comparison. The coastline extends to 162 km. The climate is moderate throughout the year except during the hot months of April, May and June when the temperature touches 48°C.

There are many tourist destinations which include Annavaram, Pithapuram, Samalkot, Korukonda, Antarvedi, Kotipalli, Draksharamam, and Dhavaleswaram.

Predominant industries include seed processing, plantation and floriculture, agro business and food processing, tobacco, beer and beverages, cotton yarn and cotton fabrics, wool, silk and man-made fiber, paper, paper pulp, chemical, drugs and pharmaceuticals, plastics, rubber, coal tar and petroleum products.
