Yarrow

Milfoil, Biranjasipha, or Gandana

Yarrow is a vertical, slightly perfumed, perennial herb with stoloniferous roots, used in blood-purifying compounds. It belongs to the species of Achillea and contains the alkaloid achilline. The name originates from the Greek hero Ahilles who is believed to have used it for healing purposes. It grows throughout the Himalayas from Kashmir to Kumaun, at altitudes of 1,050-3,600m. The herb has astringent, tonic, diaphoretic, vulnerary, and styphic properties. It is prescribed as a remedy for influenza and heavy chest colds. It also produces an essential oil. Yarrow also grows in the Bombay and Belgaum areas.
