The wheat plant is an annual, probably derived from a perennial. It is adaptable to diverse climatic conditions. PBW-343, a wheat variety developed by PAU, is a famous variety in Punjab.

Wheat (Latin name, Triticum sativum) is the main foodgrain and a significant product in the Indian market.India produces about 65-75 million tons of wheat every year, which is about 35% of India's total food grain production. Indian wheat is mainly soft / medium hard, medium protein, bread wheat. Durum wheat is also produced in central and western India. The domestic wheat consumption is in the form of chappatis or rotis using home milled atta flour, although branded packaged atta is now becoming popular in cities.

Wheat is a valuable ingredient in the feed given to milk and beef livestock and poultry because it contains more nutrients than the traditional feed grains such as maize, sorghum and barley. Mill feed, the by-product of wheat milling, is a beneficial raw material for mixed feeds. Wheat oil is used to tone and soften the lips and has a potent antioxidant activity.
