Walnut (Latin name, Juglans regia) is a large, deciduous, monoecious tree with tomentose shoots. It is considered as a dry fruit during winter, particularly in North India. It is also known as Akschota.
The edible kernel contains a globulin called juglansin. Walnut shells produce some organic acids, which are astringent and antiseptic. The leaves and bark are considered tonic, anthelmintic, alterative. The finely powdered bark is used as an ingredient in an ayurvedic drug for the treatment of bleeding gums and mouth rinse. It is also added to tooth powders, mouth rinses, deodorants and chewing gums.
