The first woman president of the United Nations General Assembly, Vijayalakshmi Pandit was born in
Allahabad in 1900. Vijayalakshmi was the daughter of
Motilal Nehru and sister of Jawaharlal Nehru, who were great patriotic leaders.
She was the governor of
Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964 and a Member of Parliament from 1964 to 1967. She also held the designation of ambassador to Soviet Union, Ireland and Spain in 1947, 1955 and 1958 respectively.
Vijayalakshmi Pandit was one of the prominent leaders in India’s struggle for freedom and was sent to jail several times. She died in the year 1990.
