Velichappadu Thullal

Velichappadu Thullal is a ritual dance associated with bhadrakalipattu, ayyappan pattu and veitaykorumakapattu. It is usually performed by the kallathukuruppanmar. A kalam is first drawn on the floor using powder of five colors. The dance is performed to the accompaniment of devotional songs and nanthuni. After this the dancer (velichappadu) in red flowery clothes enters wearing a gridle of bells around the waist and flourishing a sword in hand. Then he gets into a trance and executes vigorous movements which are called idumkoorum chavittal.
