Velapur




Velapur is situated about 32 km north-west of Pandharpur, on the Pandharpur-Malsiras state highway, in Solapur District. Solapur is located to the south-east.

Velapur is a place of historical prominence and some interesting remains were revealed from here. There are several ancient temples in the area, prominent being a temple with over 20 well carved memorial stones and an ancient shrine in Hemadpanthi style. The temple of Hara-Nareswara is also interesting, with an inscription and a flight of steps leading down to a square tank.

The eastern gateway of the village has a large slab bearing a representation of Gaja-Lakshmi. Several ancestral wadas, sculptures and ancient houses with secret tunnels and cellars can be spotted in the area. Besides, there are four important stone structures, which record the volumes about the history of the Yadav ruler Ramchandradev.

By road, Velapur is easily accessible from Solapur Bus Station. Solapur Junction Railway Station and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport serve the area.
