Veerashaivism

Veerashaivism is an independent religious system derived from Shaivism, the worship of Lord Shiva. This religious system is believed to have been established by a 12th century saint named Basavanna. It was further developed by other saints such as Allamaprabhu, Channabasavanna and Akkamahadevi.

Shaivism, which was in a declining stage during the 11th century, was given a new dimension by Basavanna. He removed all the unnecessary aspects of Shaivism such as caste and sex barriers. In his new religion, women were given the privilege of leading a religious life. People from lower castes were accepted in the religious fold. Vedas and the related rites were rejected. Women were given equal status to men and widow remarriage was allowed. The basic philosophy of the religion was monotheism. Lord Shiva was considered as the supreme god. He and Shakti were considered to be inseparable.

Veerashaivism is based on the concept that god resides within oneself. This god is to be worshipped not simply by any rituals, but through honest work, equality, social justice, sharing, respect for nature and compassion for all living beings.
