Uday Shankar (1900-1977) was a famous dancer and choreographer. He was named after the city of
Udaipur in
Rajasthan where he was born. His dance and choreography has drawn international attention. In the 1920s, he performed with the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova in Europe. He formed his own troupe in 1929 and conducted many performances in the west. He experimented with western and Indian folk and classical dances. He has also produced a film named Kalpana, based on his dances and choreography.
