Thani Avartanam

Thani Avartanam is an important element in a Carnatic musical concert. It is that part of the show where each musician gets to prove his/her mettle. The word ‘thani’ means ‘solo,’ referring to the solo act of each musician.

Thani Avartanam is usually performed just before the conclusion of the concert. This performance is initiated by the artist playing the Mridangam. He plays a set of compositions based on a particular rhythmic theme.

He is followed by other musicians in the order of importance of the instrument being played. Each musician performs alone contributing to the development of the rhythmic pattern, which gradually builds up ending in a grand finale where all the musicians join and perform together.
