Terai-bhabar is an ecologically important piece of land skirting the southern part of the
Shivalik. It consists of the Bhabar region, a narrow belt of sloping land located at the outer margin of Shivalik, and the Terai swamplands.
The Bhabar tract is devoid of springs or streams and the water table is quite low. Its terrain is porous consisting mainly of boulders and gravel. The Terai tract is quite swampy and humid, consisting of many springs and slow flowing streams. The Terai region is one of the fertile grain production areas in India.
Terai and bhabar together constitute a distinct ecologically important region in the country. It is also home to many endangered wildlife species such as the tiger, rhino, elephant and sloth bear. The region is also an ideal place for bird watching with a vital habitat for over 500 bird species.
