Tarkhan is a carpenter caste belonging to the northern parts of India. They are broadly classified into two classes, the urban and the rural.
The urban carpenter is mostly involved in works requiring great amount of skills like carpentry involved in house, furniture and occasionally toy making. In this class of carpenter, there is a sub-class of specialized persons. They are the ones who have profound knowledge in the rules concerning the construction of a house. They are also involved in the carving of the doors, doorframes, facades, pillars, support beams and eaves. These artisans command a great deal of respect in the society because of their skill and knowledge.
The rural carpenter is also involved in the house carpentry. He does the repair work of carts and carriages.
